There are three paintings representing strengths based on aspects of nature. The image on the left shows a circle in blue, red and purple. The image on the top right shows a seed in yellow, orange, blue, red, purple and greens. The image on the bottom right shows waves representing water in various shades of blue. All images were made by Jennifer Burkett while in her last year of graduate school for art therapy.
Art therapy is a type of psychotherapy that encourages you to creatively explore life challenges and support your mental health goals. Art therapy offers ways to explore your inner world, express yourself, overcome challenges, and build resiliency with and without words. Anyone is welcome in art therapy, no matter what your experience has been with art in the past. Click here for more information about the field of art therapy.
I embrace a client centered approach that is rooted in connection. I believe it is important for me to be flexible, open, soft and stable. The theories I rely on are relational models informed by attachment theory and liberation psychologies aligning with a culturally humble approach to counseling and art therapy. I feel passionate about incorporating science about the brain and psychoeducation in session. I believe that one of the amazing things about art therapy is you can meet therapeutic goals through experiences that are based in movement, the senses, symbolism and creativity in addition to cognitive and emotional ways of processing. I have specific training in trauma-informed and trauma-focused approaches and I integrate aspects of ACT and DBT in session.
I offer virtual sessions on a HIPAA compliant telehealth platform for clients 8 and up based in Virginia:
At Modyfi Health for clients with most private insurances who might be seeking integrated therapy, psychiatric and nutrition services.
At Third Space Therapy for clients with Medicaid insurance.
I also offer on-site (San Francisco Bay Area) or virtual recurring or brief groups, workshops and community-based therapeutic services for all ages in collaboration with companies, agencies and arts based organizations.
Use the above links to schedule HIPPA compliant counseling sessions and use the Contact page to request a call about community based therapeutic offerings.
