Abstraction, nature and color play.
I started drawing this shape around 2016 and I didn’t know that they were proteas at the time, but now I do. Proteas are the national flower of South Africa and symbolize change and transformation across cultures.
The 16-piece series of prints was made with a reductive block print process. The prints were pressed by hand, creating a lot of variety in the images of each pressed protea. There are four color themes and four posters (18x24”) in each theme, all on high quality paper. Each color theme has a poster with 2, 4, 8, and 20 proteas.
The paintings were made by layering block prints of the outlines from the protea print series. The protea print images are stacked on top of one another and the spaces created are painted with acrylics. There are two 11x13.5'“ paintings, one 18x24” painting, and a few small 4x6-ish” paintings, all on high quality paper.
